As coal is extracted from deep underground, many of us are naturally curious about what a real coal mine looks like and what takes place in that dark, hidden world beneath the earth's surface. However, visiting an actual coal mine is not only challenging but often restricted due to safety concerns.
To fulfil this curiosity, the National Science Centre, Guwahati has developed a mock-up coal mine gallery spanning 2,000 square feet, designed to give visitors an immersive experience of life underground.
Step into our coal mine tour and explore the unique atmosphere of a working coal mine, once the lifeblood for hundreds of miners. The visitors will learn about traditional and modern coal mining methods, the daily lives of miners, and the challenges they faced.
The gallery showcases:
- Coal cutting techniques
- Transportation methods used to bring coal to the surface
- Air circulation and lighting systems used in deep, dark tunnels
- Structural support methods that prevent tunnel collapse after excavation
- Safety measures taken to protect miners underground
This realistic mock-up brings to light many unknown, fascinating, and critical aspects of underground mining, making it a valuable educational and experiential exhibit for all ages.
